Hotel Review: Edgewater South Beach

As many times as we have been to Miami, we have never stayed at the same hotel twice.  In fact, I think half of the fun in visiting this city is checking out its many amazing hotels.  Our experience has included everything from big resorts to independent boutiques.  While we had been very pleased with all of our previous accommodations, we had yet to find a hotel with the “perfect” spot when visiting Miami Beach.

We spent the first two days of our November trip to Miami in the Coral Gables area to attend a friend’s wedding.  What Johnny and I really wanted to do on the second half of our vacation was to spend some time in South Beach.  And we were not going to compromise on the location.  It has to be on Ocean Drive, where we could have easy access to the beach and be in the middle of all the action.

Edgewater South Beach Hotel

Our vacation planning usually started with me consulting TripAdvisor.  I actually first learned about Edgewater South Beach back in January or February of this year.  Since my husband and I are quite familiar with the area, we always noticed whenever there is a new hotel opening.  Edgewater is housed in a recently renovated Art Deco building, and I immediately fell in love with the pictures that I saw online.  In particular, I couldn’t help but wanting to experience this gorgeous view for myself:

Although at that time it did not get very many reviews just yet, every single guest who has been there had very positive things to say about this place.  I wanted to stay at Edgewater badly during the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.  However, I found out about this hotel a little too late, and I couldn’t cancel my existing reservation at another place.  So when I learned that we would be returning to Miami in November, without hesitation I booked us a room at my dream hotel.

When we finally arrived, Edgewater looked as beautiful as all the images that I had seen.  Their website stated that this Mediterranean Revival style building has been in existence since 1936.

The check-in process itself was very easy.  I had already pre-paid for our stay.   So the only thing I still had to take care of was the daily resort fee, which is known as the Spoil Me Plan.  Included in this plan are amenities such as beach chairs, breakfast, afternoon happy hour, and wireless internet.  The front desk staff will give you the password to access the internet.

I was led to our room by one of Edgewater’s staff, a very pleasant gentleman named Rafaelo.  He helped me with all my luggage while my husband was away to return our rental car to the airport.  When Rafaelo opened our room, I was very pleased with what we got:

Our home away from home: a deluxe studio at Edgewater South Beach

Our room is a deluxe studio with an open floor plan, which makes it feel very spacious.  Now, let’s check out the modern kitchenette:

I love having a kitchenette in my hotel room

The kitchenette is actually located right off the entrance of our room.  On the opposite side of the kitchenette is the bathroom:

And here is a close-up look of the bedroom area:

On our first afternoon, my husband Johnny got to enjoy a bottle of beer during the hotel’s happy hour.  Happy hour and breakfast take place at Edgewater’s rooftop terrace, which is located on the fifth floor.  Even if you can’t make it for breakfast or the cocktail reception, I recommend that you visit the terrace, simply because the views from up there are quite amazing.  You can see the ocean and the beautiful palm trees, along with an aerial view of Miami Beach in general.

Enough with the rooftop terrace.  Here’s a look of the business center/office space just around the corner from the check-in area, right before you get to the elevator:

Now, let’s not forget the real reason of why we’re in South Beach.  We spent the last day of our trip relaxing at the beach.  For out-of-town visitors like us, the beach chairs and towels that the hotel provided came in really handy.  You can request the chairs and towels at the front desk.

Getting some needed rest at the beach. This comfortable chair is provided by our hotel.

And finally, let me reiterate the best feature of Edgewater: its PERFECT location.  What I meant by perfect is that although it is strategically situated in the heart of South Beach, it is about a block or two away from the busiest stretch of Ocean Drive.  I liked the fact that we did not have to deal with constant noise, and yet Johnny and I were able to walk a short distance to everything that this city has to offer.  This worked out especially well the night we attended the Sleepless Night Miami Beach festival.

I highly recommend Edgewater South Beach to anyone who is looking for quality accommodation on Miami Beach.  It does an excellent job combining the old with the new, and most importantly, it is a sanctuary in the midst of an ever-vibrant city.
